Smith Co. man indicted for murder of Longview teen after alleged 'catfishing'
Longview, Texas (KETK) — A Smith County man has been indicted for the December murder of a Longview teenager.
Alejandro Garcia, 22, of Winona was indicted by a Gregg County jury in the 124th District Court, February 27, for allegedly murdering 19-year-old Andres Chavez.
Chavez's body was was found outside a car in the woods near Sabine Street in Longview on December 23, 2013.
The following Friday, December 27, at 6:00 a.m., the Longview SWAT team executed a search and arrest warrant in rural Smith County. Garcia was arrested and charged with the murder of Chavez.
Police believe Garcia created a fake Facebook account under the alias, "Monica Ayalin,” to lure Chavez into meeting him. This common technique is known as, "catfishing."
The profile showed the two had engaged in conversations indicating the two were in a relationship.
Garcia sits in the Gregg County Jail on $500,00 bond.was transported to the Gregg County Jail and booked into jail on a $500,000 bond.
