Teen claims she was sexually assaulted by 24-year-old in Smith Co.
Tyler (KETK) — The Smith County Sheriff's Office is investigating the possible sexual assault of a teenager after receiving a report from another law enforcement agency.
On the evening of July 8, Smith County dispatchers received a call from the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office regarding a possible sexual assault. The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office told authorities they had taken a preliminary report from a teenage girl and determined the incident to have taken place in Smith County.
A Smith County deputy was immediately sent to the emergency room of a Tyler hospital to interview the victim. The 17-year-old stated she had been sexually assaulted by a 24-year-old man, whom she knew through work.
Detectives responded to the man's home and spoke with his father. The man in question then returned home and spoke with the deputies and agreed to go to the downtown Sheriff’s Office building for interrogation.
During this time, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene division arrived at the home to search for evidence. Items from the location were collected. Pending analysis of the evidence and test results, the investigation is ongoing.
More information will be released as it becomes available. However due to the sensitivity and nature of the investigation, details will be limited.
