Texas day care owner gets 80 years for murdering 4 children
Houston, TX — The woman who ran a day care in Houston that caught on fire, killing four toddlers, was sentenced to 80 years in prison Tuesday.
Jessica Tata was found guilty of felony murder last week, for the one of the deaths.
Prosecutors say, back in February 2011, Tata left a pot of hot oil on the stove, while she went shopping and left the children alone. The building went up in flames, killing four children and hurting three.
After the fire, Tata fled to Nigeria, and the U.S. Marshals Service named her one of its most wanted fugitives. The service said it worked "with international investigative resources in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to bring Tata to justice."
She was arrested in Nigeria and brought back in less than a month.
Prosecutors say Tata put her own needs before the children. Her defense attorney argued she was a caring woman who made a mistake.
Tata had faced up to 99 years in prison.
