A Van Zandt man was arraigned Monday morning on capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

On Sunday at 6 a.m., Van Zandt County Sheriff's Officers received a call from Larry Maples, 44, of Ben Wheeler, saying he had shot his wife and her boyfriend.

Deputies arrived at the 2600 block of FM 16 a short time later, and arrested Maples at the front door of his home without incident.

Investigators say Maples arrived in the early hours of the morning, parked his vehicle a short distance from the scene and walked to the home.  Maples, after seeing his wife's car parked at the rear of the home, entered the house through an unlocked door. Inside the home, Maples shot Moses Clemente, 47, of Canton, after an altercation. Maples then shot and killed his wife, Heather Maples, 34, of Ben Wheeler.
Clemente was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound. He is currently listed in critical condition and expected to fully recover.

Heather Maples was pronounced dead at the scene.

Van Zandt County Sheriff, Lindsey Ray, contacted the Texas Rangers, Van Zandt County Criminal District Attorney's Office and the Smith County Sheriff's Office to help with the investigation and crime scene. Warrants were issued to search the home and Larry Maples vehicle. Another warrant was issued to search his home in Ben Wheeler.

There is no bond for the murder charge and $100,000 for the aggravated assault.

This is why I hate living in East Texas. The ignorance of so many men in these parts makes me nauseous . I don't condone cheating, but the response from these men to such a tragic situation, just goes to further prove my feelings. There's more than one Larry Maples out there. I knew this woman, and a sweeter person you could not find. I don't know the status of their marriage, but murder was NOT the answer. I will miss Heather.

A cheating woman is NOT worth spending time in jail over!

You've got that right Howard ! They were just married in November and four months later she is hiding her car behind her boyfriend's house while her four children were shipped-off for spring break. Yep, he was a fool to marry her, a bigger fool to love her. Too bad the boyfriend can't be charged for his part in this.
