An alleged intoxicated thief makes off with another person's backhoe in Houston County Wednesday morning.

At around 5 a.m., deputies were dispatched to a call regarding the theft of a backhoe from a house on County Road 2125.

The caller, who was the owner of the vehicle , told officials he left his house to go into town and passed the backhoe and a truck following it when he realized it was his own backhoe.

A deputy was responding to the call when another call came in about a backhoe driving erratically on Highway 21. The deputy spotted the vehicle on Highway 21 and pulled the driver, later identified as 38-year-old Jason Bennett, over.

The backhoe was recovered and Bennett, who appeared intoxicated, was arrested.

After Bennett’s arrest, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a mailbox that had been damaged on CR 2125.  It was determined that the mailbox was destroyed by the backhoe.

He was taken to the Houston County Jail where he was charged with theft, driving while intoxicated and reckless destruction of property. His bond is set at $17,000. Bennett was fined an additional $100 for the mailbox.
