Cross suit reaches Supreme Court

October 7, 2009 - 5:45pm

WASHINGTON— A cross in California's Mojave Desert was front and center in the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday.

A park employee filed a suit claiming the cross favored Christianity over other religions.

The cross was placed in the Mojave Desert in 1934, to honor those who fought and died in World War One.

Veteran groups are concerned that if the cross is removed, other memorials, such as national cemeteries, will be affected too.

A federal judge has ruled the location of the cross was unconstitutional even thought it's no longer on federal property.

Congress transferred the land to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2002.

Justices must now decide if the transfer of land solved the problem.

Hopefully the cross will stay. But folks who love this country have to udnerstand that there's more than just one 'type' of soldier fighting for this free country - they aren't all just good Christian men.

Keep the cross. It's from another time & has value as aprt of our heritage. Just be accepting of more, different, religious symbols dotting this land in the furure - that's what this country is about.

If people want to fight and die for their own state-sponsored one religion, I'd suggest they move to Isreal, Saudi Arabia, Bali, or The Vatican. No one is stopping them.

This has to stop. Poeple need to get a life, and let other people have their rights in religion. We give it to them,Islams, Jewish, all of them. We should have the same right as Christians.

The cross in itself means nothing. But, apparently, the loved ones of the fallen, chose to invoke the blessings of Christ on the fallen. Anyone who removes this cross should be charged with desecration of a gravesite. Please assign the complainer to latrine duty indefinitely. He or she is a disgrace to this land we love, and they shoul be reprimanded for having contempt for the dead. This person needs to shut up or be deported to a land that does not recognise Christ. I suggest, Iraq, Afghanistan, or possibly China.
