Obama pushes two new ads against Romney

President Barack Obama's re-election campaign blasted Republican rival Mitt Romney in two new TV spots released Wednesday.

The ads targeted Romney's record as former Massachusetts governor, mostly hitting him for tax increases and accusing him of outsourcing jobs while he headed the Bay State.

"Running for governor, Mitt Romney campaigned as a job creator, but as a corporate raider, he shift jobs to China and Mexico," says a narrator in one of the ads. "As governor he did the same thing, outsourcing state jobs to India. Now he's making the exact same pitch."

The Obama campaign raised the same charge in a previous ad, using claims that the fact-checking organization PolitiFact has rated "half-true."

While it's accurate that Romney vetoed a bill as governor that would have banned existing state contracts with companies that outsourced, the ad fails to point out that implementing the ban would have cost taxpayers money without guaranteeing those jobs would return to Massachusetts.

Also notable, at the time Romney vetoed the measure, 43 states had some form of contract with companies that outsourced, according to a Government Accountability Office report.

The other Obama commercial, named "Mosaic," takes aim at the presumptive GOP presidential nominee for raising taxes and fees as governor, despite pledging to cut taxes during his gubernatorial campaign.

"As governor, Mitt Romney did cut taxes on millionaires like himself, but he raised taxes and fees on everybody else," says the narrator in the ad. "Romney economics didn't work then. It won't work now."

According to PolitiFact, Romney faced a $3 billion deficit coming into office in 2003, and overtime he had to raise revenues in order to make a dent in the budget gap. However, the taxes and fees were not squarely aimed at middle income workers, as the Obama ad suggests.

Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul characterized the ads as "misleading" and the "latest efforts by the Obama campaign to distract attention from the President's failed policies that have led to high unemployment and falling incomes."

"Mitt Romney was a successful businessman and governor with a decades-long record of helping to create American jobs, in contrast to President Obama's hostility to free enterprise that has left millions of Americans out of work. It's still the economy and the American people aren't stupid," Saul said in a statement Wednesday.

The commercials will run in the crucial battleground states of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada, according to a campaign official. CNN reported last week that the Obama campaign had purchased an additional $12.8 million for broadcast and cable ad time running from last Thursday to July 2 in nine battleground states.

The Romney campaign has yet to respond to the new spots, but last week criticized the previous round of Obama campaign commercials that attacked Romney's record as Massachusetts governor.

"President Obama will do anything to distract from his abysmal economic record and - despite that record - the fact that he thinks the private sector is 'doing fine,'" Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in a statement. "Mitt Romney knows our country can do better and, under his leadership, it will do better."
