Demonstration in Istanbul after death of young protester
ISTANBUL (CNN) — The death of a young protester in southeastern Turkey prompted thousands to turn out in Istanbul on Saturday, in what was a mostly peaceful demonstration.
The 18-year-old man was killed and at least nine others were wounded Friday while protesting the construction of a new security outpost near the city of Diyarbakir.
Protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails, setting two tents and a container building on fire, the Turkish Interior Ministry said. Turkish security forces opened fire after the group failed to heed warnings to disperse, the ministry said.
In a show of solidarity, demonstrators gathered Saturday at the entrance to Istanbul's Taksim Square, the scene of weeks of sometimes violent protests earlier this month. Police finally moved the crowd away.
