A Smith County jury found Dennis Bendy guilty in the murder of Briana Young.

Bendy, 20, shot dead Briana Young, 20, at P.T. Cole Park on July 20, 2013. According to police, Young had brought her 3-year-old son to the park when she was later caught in cross-fire and shot.

During closing arguments, state prosecutors argued Bendy could be found guilty as an individual or as a party with transferred intent: if a group has intent to cause harm and a felony is committed, everyone in the group can be charged. During the trial, the state said Elisha Williams fired the fatal shot, but Bendy had also fired eight bullets from his 9mm Glock.

The defense claimed Bendy was innocent because the state had not proven their points, and the evidence shows Bendy didn't actually kill Young. They also argued the credibility of witnesses provided reasonable doubt that Bendy was at the scene of the shooting.

Rakheem Goldstein and Elisha Williams are also charged with murder in this case. A fourth suspect, Ke’Avier Jarrod Wilson-Hurd, was no-billed.

Judge Jack Skeen presided over the hearings in the 241st District Court.

Bendy's sentencing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on August 28.
