Three deputies with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office will not have charges filed against them following a grand jury's decision last week.

On Friday, the deputies were no-billed in the separate 2013 deaths of Kevin Barrett Koonce, 46, of Etoile, and John Stevens, 41, according to the Nacogdoches County District Attorney's Office.

On August 7, 2013, Koonce was killed when multiple law enforcement agencies attempted to serve a warrant on him for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Deputies had attempted a traffic stop on the suspect when he stopped on the side of the road, jumped out of his car and ran at the patrol unit while shooting his pistol.

A deputy was able to get out of his vehicle and take cover. Koonce was still firing when the deputy was forced to return fire. EMS was on scene within a matter of minutes to give medical aid to Koonce, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stevens was killed on June 17, 2013, during a disturbance on CR 2051.

Stevens was said to be walking toward deputies and disregarded commands to stop and drop his weapon during the incident. Bean bag rounds were deployed in an attempt to disarm him. He then took cover behind some bushes and began shooting at authorities with a handgun, striking their patrol vehicle several times.

Deputies with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff Office returned fire, hitting the suspect. They gave medical attention to Stevens until EMS arrived. He was taken to the Nacogdoches County Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
