WEST MEMPHIS, AR - A prominent Arkansas doctor, the head of the State Medical Board, is fighting for his life as federal agents try to figure out who planted a bomb in his car that exploded when he left for work Wednesday morning.

Chief Robert Paudert of the West Memphis Police Department says "there was an explosion it was heard at least a mile away"

The violent blast rocked this otherwise quiet West Memphis neighborhood.

Chief Paudert says "It was a bomb."

Apparently triggered as the chairman of the Arkansas State Medical Board, Dr. Trent Pierce, left for work Wednesday morning.

Chief Paudert says "someone did put some explosive device on Dr. Pierce's car, that is what caused the explosion."

Dr. Pierce was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe burns over much of his body.

He was listed in critical condition Wednesday.

Chief Paudert says "he has lost his left eye, lost the sight of his left eye, they did surgery on right eye and hopefully he will regain sight in that eye soon."

Federal agents, with help from Arkansas state police bomb teams, continue to search Pierce's home, neighborhood, and office for evidence.

AFT agent Stuart Lawery said "we have explosive experts on site as well as national labs that will analysis the evidence."

Neighbors are also looking for clues, wondering how and why this happened.

A neighbor says "I cannot believe nobody would want to hurt that man he just a good kind man."

Who is now fighting for his life as investigators try to figure out who is responsible for the attack.
