Tyler, Texas — With temperatures dropping, many people forget how it affects your car and boat, and even your lawn mower. Remembering to winterize your car could save you any where from two to ten thousand dollars, that you might spend fixing your engine.

If you're heading out to finish your Christmas shopping and you car doesn't start, you might've forgotten to winterize. George Cornett, of West Erwin Auto Repair says, "I recommend that in the fall you should have your hoses and belts checked, and if it's due for new anti-freeze put new anti-freeze in there." He says older car models need new anti-freeze every two years, and newer models, every five years. He says, "Because of corrosion, most people don't realize if the temperature outside is 30 degrees, you're driving 30 mph and you don't have any anti-freeze in the vehicle the radiator freeze up and its just like not having a thermostat."

Engine repairs can cost up to ten thousand dollars, car mechanics says it's much cheaper to simply take care of your car, but that's not the only engine you should pay special attention to during Winter. Cornett says, "You should always get all the water out of your boat no matter what, but the engine needs to be winterized" He says the biggest mistake boat owners make is forgetting to put "sta-bil" in their fuel. "When you go to start it next spring to go fishing it won't go," said Cornett.

Agriculture specialists say normally people should have already set out fertilizers to keep their lawns healthy during the Winter months, but there are still some things you can do to help. County extension agent, Chad Gulley, says it's important to winterize your lawn since the grass and most plants come back year after year, but it's not only your plant-life that needs special attention in the Winter. He says in addition to making sure your sprinkler heads are covered when the temperatures drop, it's important to replace the blades on your lawn mowers. "In your yard when you have a bed of leaves it used to be people would rake them up but now a lot of people are leaving them there or they are mulching them with their mower leaving that organic matter back into our landscape or soil," said Gullley. We're also told it's important to keep sta-bil in your lawn mower fuel to keep it running.
