Tyler TX (KETK) — Because of the Supreme Court ruling earlier in the week , some new voting requirements just went into effect.
Photo identification will now be required for all Texas elections.
Voters need to have one of seven forms of photo id to cast a ballot.
"If you have a Texas identification, a U.S. passport, a Texas concealed handgun license, a U.S. Military id with a photo, and if you have a U.S. citizenship photo, you have what it takes to vote in a Texas election now," said Communications Director for DPS Katherine Cesinger
This is a requirement passed by the legislature in 2011, and is now effective immediately.
But, for those who don't have a photo id, Texas driver license offices now offer election identification certificates.
Cesinger says the election identification certificates are new and free of charge and you can fill out an application at your local DPS office.
'For those who do not have one of those documents, this document is going to allow them to take part in elections," said Cesinger.
Some East Texans like this new law.
its a responsible choice and something that needs to be done because we need to insure that folks that are voting in this country are either citizens or they haven't gotten their voting privileges revoked."
It's great. It gives a lot of people the chance you know to do the things they weren't able to do when they didn't have it."
