TYLER A new law going into affect september first will address the concerns of safety in school zones. The new ban prohibits drivers from "texting" or using a cell phone while in a school zone. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, thirteen thousand accidents over the last four years were caused by cell phones. Drivers will still be able to talk on their cell phones, as long as they are using a hands free device.

I don't think this law is necessary. However I do feel that using a bluetooth headset is easier and more convenient that holding a phone to your head. I don't really see how they are going to catch drivers texting when most of us hold the phone down out of view anyways, and also, if it is such a concern, then just know where the school zones are and don't drive through them during their peak hours, or just avoid them altogether. If you have kids and want to boycott this stupid law, have your kids meet you in a non-restricted area.

Like New York State, using cell phones while drying is against the law. Not only in school zones, but even in the city of Tyler, if not in the State of Texas. They are like squirrels playing in your back yard, they are a nuisance; I know we need them in this age, but my gripe is one ringing in a restaurant; one has the buzzer, take your call to the lobby or whatever. I hate to dine and have a person talking while enjoying an evening out. Main topic, save children's lives in school zones, it's a start. Yep, I use mine all the time, if I take a call, just to protect myself, I pull over at first safe place to talk.

Better than this would be the prohibition of cell phone use and texting while driving, period--not just in school zones. To those who are offended: Grow up and get over yourselves. When your "rights" can harm others, you shouldn't have that right.

Robert-Do you want our country and county to change for the better? It's not about taking away your rights! It is about keeping children and other citizens safe! I think that is the important to have people pay more attention when driving. I am all for it!

The government has no right to tell a private citizen when they can or cannot use a cell phone. Sad to see less outrage over more intrusion into our lives.

Ever been driving, a car pulls across your path, and they are not paying attention and nearly runs u out of the way? So you think texting is ok while driving? Do you have kids? Ever dine out, the guy next table, it jabbing away abuot his wife leaving him or making just small talk for all to hear? Do you enjoy that sort of thing? You make no sense at all. We're not losing our rights, they are trying to protect all of us.

I think it is a great thing to have , no cell phones in the school zones this will keep students and teacher from texting and sexting .

If this saves one childs life it is well worth it.There is no way that a driver has complete control of his car while texting or using a cell phone at anytime or place.Like playing with a loaded gun and pulling the trigger.
