With a burn ban in effect in many parts of East Texas, many are illegally dumping their trash around town.

A constable we spoke with says it's being tossed everywhere -- from the side of the road, private property, dumpsters and even around lakes.

But the repercussions aren't pretty.

If you get caught in Cherokee County, fines start at $500. And it could get a lot more expensive.

"They don't want to pay to carry it off. They are not able to burn it and some of them are scared to carry it out in the county because they know I'm going to be on their case," said Constable Eddie Lee of Jacksonville.

Officials suggest to go ahead and pay the minimal fee for a trash service or take it to a land fill.

If you have a dumpster of your own, put a lock on it.
