Tyler, TX (KETK) — More and more East Texans are doing whatever they can to make their dollar last longer.
And many are turning to canning their produce.
KETK spoke with local canning experts to get some tips on how to get started.
They say to remember that canning does not improve your produce, it only preserves them, so be sure that your fruits and vegetables are in good condition before you start.
Be sure to use a mason jar, and some form of heating device to make sure the lid is sealed.
Water and salt are the main ingredients in preservation, but some people like to add spices.
But experts say use caution, because too many spices will invite bacteria.
And no matter what, always make sure to check and make sure your canned produce is still viable.
