Henderson, Tx (KETK) — Every summer, many kids look forward to heading off to camp. So, Heart's Way Hospice of Northeast Texas created a special camp to combine fun and healing for children who have lost loved ones. The grief camp is for children who have lost loved ones, a parent, grandparent, sibling, or friend. Counselors say death is a hard concept for children to understand and cope with.
Through the grief camp, children are given the opportunity to learn coping and grieving skills through games, activities and bonding. An important component of the camp is the friendships that are made among campers, counselors say children learning they aren't alone and there are other children dealing with loss is very therapeutic.
This is the second year Heart's Way Hospice has held the camp and counselor Tamra Privitt says strong bonds between the campers have already formed.
"Getting to see each other again, because a lot of the kids came last year and they were so excited to see each other this year, they just fell in love with each other all over again. They get to see "oh I'm not the only one that's suffering, I'm not the only one that's lost somebody, it's a huge benefit."
