TYLER, Texas (AP) - Authorities say a 41-year-old East Texas man is dead and another is in jail after what appears to be a hunting accident.

A Rusk County Sheriff's Office statement says Louis Nicklas Conner Jr., of Overton, died from a gunshot wound.

Conner was on a deer lease in eastern Rusk County when the incident occurred Saturday morning.

A hunter shot at what was thought to be a deer. The shooter called the sheriff's office after discovering the victim's body.

The shooter was arrested on a felon in possession of a firearm charge.

The person is being held in Rusk County Jail. Sgt. Viki Penny says the shooter's name will be released after arraignment Monday.

The sheriff's department is investigating and will forward its findings to the Rusk County District Attorney's Office.
