Tyler (TX) — East Texas is blessed with significant health care and dental care resources. However, most resources are clustered in larger communities leaving rural areas with limited access. In addition, East Texans, in general, experience higher incidence of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes, often related to higher smoking rates, obesity, and lack of exercise. This is coupled with higher poverty rates, lower insurance coverage, and lower educational availability, all risk factors for poorer health.
"Our goal for this program is to provide preventative and primary medical and dental care to uninsured East Texans. We want to refer participants that do not currently have providers to medical homes as much as we can and ultimately want to encourage participants to adopt healthy lifestyles to improve their quality of life," says George Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of NET Health.
The outreach event will be held at Van Junior High School on 630 S. Oak St., in Van TX, on June 2nd - 6th. Registration will begin at 8:00 AM each day and will conclude at noon on Friday, June 6th. No one will be admitted prior to 7:00 AM each day.
Services that will be provided are as follows: medical exams, dental exams and basic treatment, vision & hearing tests, immunizations (shot records required), health screenings (blood pressure, BMI, glucose, & cholesterol), student physicals, mental health services and mammography services. Information will also be provided on: tobacco awareness, oral health awareness, diabetes information, nutrition and health, and family emergency preparedness.
Dental services will require pre-screening, that will only be held on June 2nd and 4th. There will be a limited number of dental patients treated and patients will be asked to return for treatment the following day. Treatment will be limited to fillings and extractions.
The program will not only provide free, basic medical and dental care to UNINSURED East Texans, but will also promote healthy living by educating participants on how to Eat Healthy Foods, Be Physically Active, Avoid Tobacco In All Forms, Follow the Advice of Your Doctor, Know Your Numbers, Manage Your Health, and Get Regular Screenings.
In addition to the Van Independent School District, partners for the outreach program are the University of Texas at Tyler School of Nursing and Health Sciences, UT Health Northeast Family Medicine Residency Program, NET Health, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Military Forces, Piney Woods Regional Advisory Council Trauma Service Area-G, Texas A&M University, Baylor College of Dentistry, Andrews Center, Tyler Junior College and many other community organizations.
