Kilgore, Tx (KETK) — Julie Webb says becoming a firefighter has always been her dream.
"But, being a girl..and growing up in a very strict, religious household...we had certain roles that we were supposed to fulfill."
Webb says she felt she had to go down a different path and put out her dream of entering the fire service.
" I was a stay-at-home mom for 11 years..three years ago my youngest got into kindergarten..and I had lots of time on my hands so I decided to start substitute teaching."
Webb's burning desire to become a firefighter could not be extinguished. She says with the support of her family she began climbing the ladder, starting with volunteer firefighting and in March, she was hired by Kilgore--as the department's second female firefighter.
Webb says being a woman in a male dominated career has its challenges.
"To do the same thing that a guy does..we do have to work harder..that doesn't mean we can't do it..that doesn't mean we shouldn't do it."
She says there are some things female firefighters bring to the service that men don't.
"More compassion..being a mom..I feel we have a little more sense of what people are going through..we can identify with them and give them a little more passion."
Webb is thrilled she decided to take the leap into the fire service and she encourages all women to do the same.
"Go for it..good luck..you can do it..don't be afraid to try..and give it your all."
