East Texas rodeo athlete readies for nationals
Flint, TX (KETK) — Cole Wheeler from Flint, has been calf roping since he was 13, and riding horses since he was nine, and in the coming weeks, the 18-year old will compete alongside the best high schoolers in the country.
Wheeler and his teammate,Marcus Bannister, have qualified for the High School Nationals in Rocksprings Wyoming.
Wheeler's dad, Nickey, was a champion bull rider, and thus rodeo runs through Cole's veins, but according to him, he didn't want to do something as crazy as riding bulls.
So he picked up team roping, and his bedroom is lined with numerous awarded buckles.
Wheeler will be heading to Guthrie, Oklahoma on Thursday, before competing in the International Competition in Shawnee, afterward he will be heading to Rocksprings, riding for the ultimate prize.
