East Texas shines light on Juneteenth commemoration
Longview, TX — Events this weekend in Longview, Kilgore and Gladewater will commemorate the history of black Americans as part of Juneteenth celebrations.
Blacks in Texas first heard news of the Emancipation Proclamation on June 19, 1865 — two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln ended slavery.
“This event is about celebrating something that otherwise wouldn’t be celebrated,” said Danta Means, director of the Longview Juneteenth Pageant.
Longview will finish its week of festivities beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday at Broughton Park. The day includes a softball tournament, parade, Broughton Gym Praise, line dancing and live entertainment.
The Juneteenth Black Rodeo will wrap up festivities at 8 p.m. June 28 at the Longview Rodeo Arena.
