East Texas Skywarn spotters get authorized training in Tyler

Friday, February 21, 2014 - 12:16am

The National Weather Service was in Tyler Thursday afternoon, recruiting and training active members of their "Skywarn" team.

They are called weather spotters, and those here in East Texas, notify the weather service in Shreveport whenever they see inclimate weather in this area.

To be an authorized spotter, you must attend two classes such as this per year.

Weather radars continue to get more and more advanced, but according to National Weather Service meteorologist Brandi Richardson, nothing can replace the eyes and ears on the ground.

Topics covered that night included:

How thunderstorms develop
The fundamentals of storm structure
Severe weather features
How to report information
Severe weather safety

The next area spotters class will be this Saturday in Longview at the National Guard Armory from 9 AM to 1 PM.
