The government shutdown has forced a number of federal businesses to shut their doors.

This including national parks and memorials.

The closures are not only upsetting for visitors and veterans but also lawmakers.

On Tuesday, a group of veterans from Mississippi were set to tour the WWII Memorial grounds.

A sacred place for many veterans.

But, instead they were greeted with barricades and a sign of closure.

"They were going to be prevented for the only time in their lives to be here they were going to be prevented from being out here in this memorial," said Congressman Louie Gohmert.

This frustrated many lawmakers including Gohmert.

"This is an open air memorial."

Gohmert along with other lawmakers broke through the barricades and helped our war heroes get in.

And they did it again on Wednesday.

"They spent more money last night bringing the barricades and closing them back, so it was an honor again to shake each WWII veterans hand,'' said Gohmert.

Sen. Cruz also spoke out about the closure saying:

"President Obama is so fixated on forcing Obamacare on the American people that he's even willing to deny WWII veterans the right to access the memorial they have earned through their heroic service."

30 WWII veterans from East Texas are expected to touch down in Washington D.C. on Oct. 10.

And they hope that lawmakers like Gohmert to do the same for them.

"It is our intent to see the WWII monument as well the memorial,'' said Brookshire's Director of Public Relations Rebecca Sanders.
