Kids have cell phones at school and it's causing problems. Should younger school age children be able to have and use cell phones?

I know where my children are at all times and will be able to get hold of them. When they are old enough to get a job and pay for their own phone and vehicle then they can get one. Elementary age children are simply not responsible enough for cell phones and shouldn't be held to that standard. You are allowing them to grow up too quickly. I agree they should have some responsibility and I do understand special circumstances, but generally speaking, it is ridiculous.
My 9 yo daughter got a phone last year. She walks home from school alone and plays at a friends house that doesn't have a house phone. I want to be able to reach her when I need to. I didn't like her getting a phone that early but I do like her being more independent like I was at that age. But a little safer.
It's a 2 sided thing.. My husband is a teacher/coach and our kids go to school with him. They can have their phones at school ,BUT are not allowed to use them and will be charged $15.00 if they do. Yes i think that is a good thing, but if my kids are not with me, sports riding around or they need to call to come and get them they can use there phone. Yes it is a 2 sided way. What did I dowhen I was there age? But we are in the here and now and i able to give them that they will have it. And for people who dont let there kids have them thats their way, it not the kids fault for having phones or their parents, (thats life we don't have what this person has but i am not going to say it not right and they should not do that...
I totally agree with T Davis. These days there is no safe place anymore...including schools!! My child has a cell phone for emergencies ONLY! In example, say there was an emergency situation at school....while every other parent is waiting to get information from the news wondering if their child is fine, I'll be talking to mine directly and know she is ok! Then my child will let your kid borrow her cell phone to call you!! And you will be able to thank me later.
when my child gets a job and can pay for the cell phone themselves then they can have one.
kids are safe at school??? what rock have you been living under! it doesn't hurt for them to have a way to call you if they need to
and it makes me feel much better about letting mine run around the neighborhood if i know they are just a phone call away.
I have 2 children one is now 20 and the other is 21, i didnt give them cell phones until they were almost out of school. When they went out I gave them mine to use. It is crazy when parents give their kids phones and then send them to school, what dio they need a phone at school for? NOTHING
Parents that get there elementary children cell phones cause issues for other parents that don't feel it is necessary for there child to have a cell phone yet. My 10 year old son is always saying it's not fair that he can't have one, everyone else does. Yet I don't think he needs one. If he needs to make a call, he can use there minutes! LOL Elementary children with phones is just ridiculous! People are not saving any luxury for their children when they get older. They will have already had everything. What's there to look forward to?
NO! they should not have them. Any school age child is in safe hands while in school. I think they are good for emergencies only.
Cell phones can be a dangerous thing, plus they are an irritant. Driving while yakking on them creates danger for all on the road.
Seems people can't go anywhere without having one stuck in the ear,driving,shop-
ping, eating out. It's like an umbilical cord.
