New businesses, restaurants popping up all over Tyler

Burger House Hamburgers opening Sept. 21

September 17, 2009 - 6:12pm

TYLER - Finally, we receive good financial news for the country and East Texas.

This week, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the recession is winding down and as the economy picks up, parts of East Texas are back on the fast-track for growth.

John Egan calls it a leap of faith.

Right in the meat of the 'Great Recession' he decided to open a new restaurant in Tyler.

The grand opening for "Burger House Hamburgers" is Sept. 21 and this week workers are putting the finishing touches on the restaurant located along S. Broadway Ave. near Stein Mart.

Egan said small businesses should be credited as digging us out of the recession.

"It excites me a lot," he said, while giving us a tour of the kid's area of the restaurant. "I think there's a lot of growth, there's a lot of potential people don't realize. There are approximately a half-million people coming in and out of Tyler each week."

Egan and his wife moved from the Dallas-area a couple of years ago to prepare for the opening of the store.

According to statistics, it was a good move.

One study projects the local economy growing at four percent over the next few years and that's almost a full-point-or-more over the national average.

Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass said sales tax numbers have been down based on new home sales and construction. However, in the same sentence, she said general retail has held up really well.

"Tyler is the regional center of East Texas," said Mayor Bass. "Population is 100-thousand in city limits but on any given day, 250-thousand people are within city limits."

Mayor Bass said there are few reasons Tyler is considered a hub. There is the medical district, several universities and large companies and businesses located in city limits.

In the last year, Academy Sports and Outdoor Store opened along with several other hotels and restaurants.

A new car wash is also being built on WSW Loop 323.

Business has been so strong at LifeWay Christian Store they needed more room and recently moved where Goody's was once located. Next door from LifeWay, Ulta Cosmetics is setting up shop.

"Tyler is blowing up," said Allison McKinney, owner of Smoothie King and Einstein Bros. Bagels. "North, South, East and West..there is room for growth everywhere, so why not grow here?"

I recently opened a new natural stone yard in Flint, Tx. January 09, called Five Star Stone. We have been very pleased with our success so far and hope the economy continues to gain strength. We are located on Old Jacksonville Hwy next door to the Flint/Gresham Fire Dept.. I have worked as a salesman in this industry for 8 years and finally decided to take a leap of faith. Some people thought we were crazy but it is always risky starting a new business regardless of the state of the economy. We feel if we can make it now then the future looks bright. Thank you Tyler area builders for all your loyalty and support.

Many say that starting a business when the economy is low is a great way to test your service and product quality because only the best will survive. When we discovered a quality and efficient garage storage system patented in Idaho, we decided to be the first to bring the Monkey Bars garage storage system to Texas this year regardless of the slow economy.

In order to stand out as a different kind of company, we strive to offer a level of service that is unheard of in East Texas. For instance, we know our customers have complicated schedules and thus we make ourselves available from 7 am until 9 pm for telephone inquiries, garage analysis and estimates, and for installations after hours and on weekends in order to meet their needs. In order to separate ourselves from the competitors, we do not accept any payment or deposit until after the installation is 100% complete. Combine that with a NO RISK guarantee that no other company offers to our knowledge - if a customer is not completely satisfied with the installed storage system, we agree to take it down and leave with a smile - they owe absolutely nothing. We of course are extremely confident in the quality and value of what we offer, but nevertheless, in this economy, it is better to lose a day of work than to leave a customer unsatisfied. Fortunately, we have had only smiles and pleased people after an installation. Gorgeous Garage of East Texas is a fully owned and operated by long time East Texas residents, Mike and Shain Emerine (903 570 5231) Our main product page is available at www.GorgeousGarage.com and www.GarageStorageCabinets.com.

I opened Studio T hair design on June 26th, across the street from the mall in Macy's Plaza. I formerly owned a partnership in the Tyler franchise of Toni & Guy Hairdressing, which taught me the value of continuing education and customer service. As of today we have not yet had a Grand Opening,(we're working on it), but business is doing well. Most of our clientele have been contacted and we are working daily on different types of advertisement! It is heartening to see you are doing a segment on locally owned businesses! I believe these local companies will be the ones to get us out of such hard economic times!

I recently started my own photography business here in East Texas called "Picture This Photography". I have just started advertising and I am in the process of building my customer base. I will come to the location of choice (within reason) and provide "on-site" photo sessions. My services include anything from bridal photos to birthday parties. If you are wanting to personalize your greeting cards this year, I can do that as well.... You can visit my website at www.picture-this-photography.webs.com/ or reach my by phone at 903-721-3868.
I can guarantee a relaxed and fun atmosphere during your photo shoot. I look forward to meeting you.
