TYLER — Thousands of Texans were hoping for a 13-week extension of unemployment benefits, but according to the Texas Workforce Commission, that's not going to happen.

More than 80,000 unemployed Texans won't get money to help them through the tough economy, and state workers say federal rules and state computer problems are to blame.

Officials also say the state's unemployment trust fund will be empty by next week, but the Commission is already acting to borrow more than $600 million to pay claims through the beginning of October.

Commission officials say the surge in those applying for benefits is so large, it has jammed up call centers preventing thousands from even getting through.
