Caterpillar announcing 20,000 job cuts
TYLER - Less than a week in office, President Obama is taking action already, announcing Monday he can create jobs if Congress gives him what he wants: an economic stimulus plan.
His cost: $825 billion in government spending, but he says he'll save or create four million jobs.
"We can't afford distractions and we cannot afford delays," President Obama said Monday morning in a press conference.
President Obama's plea comes on a day over 72,000 jobs - and counting - from major U.S. companies were lost.
The biggest cutback came at heavy equipment maker Caterpillar. Twenty-thousand people got pink slips there.
Home Depot, Sprint Nextel, GM, Pfizer-Wyeth, Texas Instruments, John Deere and ING also announced huge cuts.
"The economy has slowed down quite a bit," said Stephen Lynch, area director of Workforce Solutions East Texas. "It has impacted our hiring cycle here in East Texas."
But he says there is some optimistic news on the home front.
Thirty companies plan to team up with the Workforce Solutions East Texas for a job fair in Tyler Thursday.
"It's a good opportunity for a person looking for a job," said Lynch. "(A person) needs to apply themselves because these employers are in hiring mode."
Also, San Diego-based PG Films, Plastic and Solutions says it will open a branch in Lufkin. They plan to possibly employ 125 people in the next three years.
