Edited Interview with Congressman Louie Gohmert

March 15, 2009 - 9:02pm

TYLER - "When the President announced that he wants to, or intends to close Guantanamo within the year. That's serious stuff when you know who we have down there," Congressman Louie Gohmert says.

Congressman Louie Gohmert toured the facilities at Guantanamo Bay for the second time in three years to find out who is down there, and how they're treated.

"Guantanamo has never had anybody waterboarded, tortured in any way. It is the most humane setting for holding people as you can imagine," Mr. Gohmert says.

In fact, he thinks the ones who are treated inhumanely are the guards.

"To have some way of punishing the detainees who throw feces or urine on guards, which happens two dozen times everyday," Mr. Gohmert explains.

But Congressman Gohmert says many of the people in Gitmo still hold a desire to terrorize the United States, as he reads an affidavit from one prisoner, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

"He says that basically, they are proud of being terrorists, they are proud of the role they played in 9/11."

So Congressman Gohmert fears what will happen if some of these prisoners are released, like others have been in the past.

"It offends me that some of them have been released simply because they've said they were not a part of anything...I think it's about twelve percent of the ones we've released have been engaged in terrorist activities since we've released them," he says.

Mr. Gohmert believes the best thing to do is keep Gitmo open to avoid finding a place to put prisoners if it's closed down, and he hopes President Obama makes the same decision.

"Now he's finding out we've got a real problem. You close that place, where do they go?"
