(CNN) -- A man kidnapped from his home in Wake Forest, North Carolina, five days ago has been rescued by the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team in Atlanta, the FBI said Thursday.

The abduction of Frank Arthur Janssen, which authorities say occurred April 5, was part of an elaborate plan that involved at least five people who are now facing federal kidnapping charges, law enforcement officials said.

FBI North Carolina Special Agent John Strong said demands were sent to Janssen's family "for the benefit" of Kevin Melton, an inmate at Polk Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina. Melton is serving a life sentence without parole, Strong said.

The inmate had been prosecuted by Janssen's daughter, an assistant district attorney in Wake County.

Janssen has been reunited with his family, officials said Thursday, just hours after his harrowing rescue from the Forest Cove apartment complex in Southeast Atlanta, officials said.

The FBI in Charlotte and Atlanta, the Wake Forest Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are investigating, along with other law enforcement outlets in North Carolina and Georgia.
