Emergency experts show off their skills
June 28, 2009 - 7:21pm
TYLER-East Texans got a chance to see some emergency experts show off their skills at Tyler State Park Saturday.
The Tyler Amateur Radio Club and the East Texas Emergency Communications Service demonstrated how HAM radios can be used in emergencies to communicate.
HAMS can provide emergency communications for agencies such as the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and FEMA.
There are 674,000 licensed amateur radio operators in the U.S. and more than 2.6 million worldwide.

Amateur radio is such a Godsend. The fact that there are people that are capable of providing communication in a disaster scenario such as Katrina is very reassuring. The fact that they can be operational in 30 minutes and provide this service for free is amazing. Thank you for your time and effort in making East Texas a safer place.
