The hair was falling to the floor Monday night on the first floor of the Ornelas Student Center at East Texas Baptist University as 21 people are supporting new styles after their haircuts.

The haircuts came at the conclusion of an effort called Shear Love to raise funds to help two people battling cancer.

A goal of $5,000 was set and $5,500 was raised to help with medical expenses for ETBU student Nathan Mathias and Jessica Bendo, sister of ETBU student Gabrielle Garcia. The two are currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

“I was completely blown away by the support from the students,” said Payton Beggs, one of the student organizers for the fundraiser. “Students were dropping big bucks into the mason jars, and there were students emptying out their coin purses every day to save their friends from losing their hair.”

During the past two weeks, the 21 people willing to get their hair cut in support of the two fighting cancer have held a contest asking for donations from the ETBU community. Donors were asked to stuff jars with a photo of each of the volunteers pasted on it with cash. The ETBU Strike Out Cancer fund also donated $500 to the cause.
