A 3-year-old from East Texas died tragically Monday in an accidental shooting in Navarro County. The child was allegedly shot by his 8-year-old cousin.

At noon, authorities received a call on a reported shooting on SE County Road 3144 in the Eureka Community, said Navarro County Sheriff Elmer Tanner. When deputies arrived at the scene, a child was found dead with a single gunshot wound to his head.

Officials recovered a 20-gauge single shot shotgun, which is believed to be the gun used. The shooting has been deemed accidental, said Sheriff Tanner. It is believed the gun was fired by the victim's 8-year-old cousin.

The children were playing inside a building adjacent to a home when the shot rang out. Parents were at the location when the accident occurred, but were not directly supervising the children inside the building at the time of the shooting.

The victim's family, who is from Nacogdoches, was said to be visiting their relatives, according to Tanner.

Officials have not released the name of the victim, but WFAA in Dallas has reported the child's name as Braison Howard.

Just who in the heck leaves a loaded gun in a shed, barn or anywhere else outside the home, especially when they know kids are playing outside?
