Milam County, Texas (KWKT) — The Department of Public Safety has identified a woman who was killed in a two-vehicle accident in Milam County, Monday.
Ellaree Mathews, 53, who was serving time for an Angelina County conviction, was pronounced dead on the scene of the wreck by Justice of the Peace Sam Berry of Cameron. Her family has been notified, and her body has been taken to Travis County Medical Examiner's Office.
According to DPS Trooper D.L. Wilson, the accident happened around 11:00 a.m., at the intersection of US 77 and FM 485. Wilson says a 2003 company van, belonging to Land Manor Incorporated out of Beaumont, was transporting released inmates to the Franklin House in Beaumont. The van was traveling east on FM 485 when it stopped at a stop sign. A 2011 gold passenger car was traveling south on US 77. The passenger van pulled out in front of the Hyundai when it was "t-boned", meaning the driver's side was hit. The van then rolled over and ejected two passengers.
Two of the passengers were taken to Cameron Hospital, where they were treated and released. The driver of the van and two other passengers were taken to Scott and White Hospital in Temple with serious injuries. The driver of the car was also taken to Scott and White Hospital with serious injuries.
The passengers in the van were inmates that were picked up in Gatesville earlier in the morning. They were from the Hackberry Unit, which is the women's prison.
