Longview, Texas (KETK) — A Gregg County Jury has cleared five law enforcement officers in the fatal shooting of Randy Vinson earlier this year. The jury heard testimony on Wednesday.
Back on February 18, 2014, Vinson murdered his sister-in-law, 32-year-old Elizabeth Vinson, off Highway 31 in Kilgore because she was kicking him out of her home. She was found lying inside a vehicle in the driveway of her home when authorities arrived. Her cousin and daughter were inside the vehicle when the shooting took place.
After Vinsons ran into nearby woods following the shooting, a massive manhunt began. He later emerged from the wooded area about 200 yards from the murder scene and stood on Rabbit Creek Bridge holding a rifle.
Ten minutes into the standoff, Vinson fired a shot and authorities returned fire, knocking the suspect into Rabbit Creek below. When law enforcement moved toward the creek, Vinson rose from the water and attempted to grab his gun. Officers then fired at Vinson and killed him.
The suspect's SKS Rifle with a 21 cartridge magazine was recovered at the scene.
The Texas Rangers conducted the investigation.
