ETX suspect to jailer: I should have shot the cop that caught me

Lufkin, Texas (KETK) — Two Lufkin men were arrested after stealing a vehicle and leading police on a chase.
Lufkin Police Department Sergeant David Casper said around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, an off-duty officer spotted two people looking into a vehicle in the 800 block of Pierce Street in Lufkin. The officer called for help and waited until an on-duty officer arrived.
When police made it to the scene, the suspects hopped into a car and drove off quickly. The officer followed the vehicle until it wrecked out in the 200 block of E Denham Avenue. The men jumped out of the car and ran from the officer.
The officer chased after the driver, meanwhile, other responding law enforcement set up a perimeter. They were able to find the passenger hiding under a vacant home in the 100 block of Conn. The driver was eventually caught on foot nearby.
When the passenger was taken into custody, he was found to be in possession of credit cards not belonging to him. As of the last update, authorities had not spoken with the owners of the cards to determine if the passenger had their permission to have the items.
Investigators determined the suspects had just stolen the car after speaking with the owner. A stolen pistol was also found inside the vehicle. Other electronics were taken as evidence to compare with other reports of stolen property.
While at the jail, the driver told jailers he should have shot the cop that caught him, said Casper.
The driver was identified as Jess Martinolich, 20, of Lufkin. He was charged with theft of a firearm, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, retaliation and evading arrest or detention. He bail was set at $78,000.
The passenger was identified as Davante Anthony, 22, of Lufkin. He was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle , theft of a firearm, evading arrest or detention, and 2 class C warrants. His bail was set at $2,119.
