Evangelist Billy Graham compares U.S. to Sodom

U.S. — Billy Graham, America's dean of Christian evangelists, has compared the United States to Sodom and Gomorrah, the Biblical cities synonymous with sin.
"Self-centered indulgence, pride, and a lack of shame over sin are now emblems of the American lifestyle," Graham writes in the open letter released by his organization this week.
He blasts what he sees as efforts to keep references to Jesus out of the public sphere.
"Our society strives to avoid any possibility of offending anyone -- except God. Yet the farther we get from God, the more the world spirals out of control," he writes in the letter released Tuesday.
Graham, 93, has preached to untold millions over six decades, and provided counsel to generations of U.S. presidents.
His letter also contains a fundraising appeal and a notice that Graham's son Franklin, himself a major evangelical figure, is launching a new effort to "bring the Gospel into neighborhoods and homes in every corner of America next year."
Randall Balmer, the chair of the religion department at Dartmouth College, suspects the motivation for the letter is at least partly political.
"It's hard for me to believe that this letter does not have political intent," he said.
Its move to decry what he would see as moral decay "would be tied to the Obama administration," he argued, asking rhetorically why Graham would not have issued the statement in response to an event like the Abu Ghraib torture scandal.
Graham's spokesman did not immediately respond to a question about what prompted the letter.
It does not clearly refer to specific recent events.
Balmer said that evangelicals would take note of the letter, though Graham has largely retired from the public eye in recent years.
"There is certainly admiration for Billy Graham, as there should be," Balmer said. "There is lingering respect for Billy Graham and I think that people will take notice."
But he said the comparison to Sodom and Gomorrah -- which Graham attributes to his late wife Ruth in the letter -- was startling.
"When Billy Graham came to Madison Square Garden in 1957, he made comments comparing New York City to Sodom and Gomorrah and was roundly criticized for it," Balmer said. Since that time, Balmer said, Graham has largely avoided making the comparison to the Biblical cities.

I so agree with Billy Graham! Our nation has turned completely away from what it was. What was deemed wrong is now accepted and what was right is now ridiculed as closed minded. I never thought I would see a day in America when Christians would be considered the villians of our time. I never thought I would see people stand in defense of what is wrong and every evil thing would be commonly welcomed in the name of equality. God help this country. We need him.
GOD WILL HAVE THE LAST SAY.
For all too long we have been letting a few unbelivers control what is to be laws of this nation and giving a second thought to the laws of God. The first thing they want to say is, THERE IS NO GOD!! Soon as there is trouble they can't see their way out, then you'll hear OH GOD, LORD HELP ME, and whatever else they think will work to manage the problem that they have caused to themselves. Why is it we can't understand that without God we are NOTHING!!!!!!!!!
I thank Rev. Graham for speaking up and out about America. God loves America just like any of His children. However, our behavior has been that of a disobedient, rebellious child, selfish child, and God is brokenhearted. I agree 100% with Rev. Graham. If we as Americans have not seen the 'handwriting on the wall' at this point - then we must be blind. We need to prepare ourselves for what He wants to do with us. May God have mercy on our souls.
This is the Apocalypse. Illinois Lottery drew 666 the day of Obama's election. Spread this news, even to the Far East and you'll go to heaven.
Thank you Rev. Graham.
Fortunately I have an awesome Pastor Dr Randy Valimont of 1st Assembly Griffin GA who teaches the Word faithfully. He also believes America is headed for even greater tragedy...if we continue down the path we are headed, the wrath of God will be heavy on us. We must be faithful to His Word, and also continue to support Israel in every way possible. Wake up America, don't be mislead by those who would chose that we turn away from our Christian Heritage.
the reverend said it best if god dosen't destroy the united states god will owe sodom an d gomorraah an apology
He is completely right for a change. Homosexuality rampant, and approved of by those in government, blatant pornography available on out TV's and the Internet, one is four of our teen girls contracting at least one STD, respect for others at an all time low. I think we are worse than the cities of old that Graham mentions. I believe that God is lifting his hand of protection from this land of ours. Floods, fires, failing crops, unpayable national debt.
GET READY FOR WORSE OR CHANGE OUR WAYS.
