For all the east Texas gardeners out there, if you're thinking of planting new grass, now might be the time to do so.

We spoke with some experts in the area and they say now is the perfect time to plant new grass.

"Right now, we have an excellent planting window," said certified landscaper James Wilhite. "We've had some nice moisture, temperatures are good, grass is really growing strong," he said.

Rachel Fry of FNCPonds Stone and Grass says it's her busiest time of year for selling the green stuff.

"This is definitely biggest time of year in comparison ... at least 50 percent our sales go up," Fry said.

After you've decided to plant your new grass, Wilhite says you've got some choices to make.

"You can plant either seed or sod, St. Augustine only comes in sod, Centipede comes in sod, so does Bermuda, Crown Zoysia, however Bermuda and Centipede also come in seed form," Wilhite said.

Sod, which is live growing grass cut straight from the ground, is more expensive, but for those that are impatient, it's your ticket to an instant lawn.

But of course with seed comes the waiting game.

So Wilhite has a suggestion if you want the best of both worlds.

"You can take sod and cut it up into smaller pieces, and plant those smaller pieces around and allow the grass to spread and grow," Wilhite said. "You don't have to establish a solid lawn if you got the patience to work with it and for it to establish on its own."

Wilhite says seed on the other hand gets up and going within as little as 10 days.

We're told if you do go with the sod, make sure you ask when it was taken out of the ground for the best results.

"You wanna count five days from the time that it is taken from the ground and get it right back into the ground within five days for the best results," Fry said.
