Unfortunately spring brings more than just warmer weather, termites swarm this time of year and the damage they cause can really hurt your wallet. This week is termite prevention week, and the reason these tiny bugs are getting so much attention is because of the damage they can do to your home.

"It's a huge problem nation-wide," said Dennis Newberry from Alpha Pest Control. "It's traumatic to the people that own it. Termites are actually eating away at the equity in your home."

Exterminators call termites the silent killer because if left alone they can literally eat you out of house and home. Annually, termites cost Americans more than five billion dollars.

They live in the soil and eat at the inside of your house, allowing them to cause thousands of dollars worth of damage before you even know they are there. Which is why it is so important to have a professional come out and check your house.

"People need to have constant inspections year to year," Newberry said. "It's like a physical checkup for people."

Mechele Mills with the Better Business Bureau gave KETK a few tips on spotting the termites.

"Look for the little mud tunnels they make to get to their food source," Mills said. "Look for any rotted wood around your home. If you tap on it and it sounds hollow it might be a sign that you have termites."

If you are worried about paying someone to come inspect your house, professionals say the treatment is cheaper than the repairs.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," Mills said.
