Rusk County, Texas (KETK) — Rusk County is seeing an increase in family violence cases. Judge Joe Sorrells says he's seen four family violence cases in his courtroom already this week, a much higher number than usual. Hot temperatures in the summer can escalate stress between family members and a lot of parents feel stressed out about finances as their kids get ready to head back to school. Judge Sorrells says financial stress is a big factor in family violence. He also says he's never seen a family violence case that didn't involve alcohol and or drugs--prescription or illegal.
Judge Sorrells attributes the recent rise in family violence cases to the ever growing popularity of synthetic marijuana.
"It's turning out to be the most harmful mind-altering affect..drug that we've experienced..the problem with law enforcement not being able to control it..it's so easy to get..that's driving our family violence up..it's a mind altering drug."
If you are the victim of abuse, call police immediately.
