TYLER - Today was opening day for the East Texas State Fair Farmers' Market in Tyler.

Table after table was full of fresh home grown produce and other East Texas goodies filling the Livestock Pavilion at the fairgrounds Saturday morning.

Everything from onions to peaches to squash, and even honey were out to purchase, and people were buying away.

"It's the starting of the summers, so we're going to get bigger and better as we go," Kelsey Grote says.

Kelsey Grote is one of the organizers of the market and he tells us the heavy spring rain has made farming a little difficult this year compared to last year's.

"A lot of farmers have had issues with there crops and had to replant. There are some things that are not quite ready but we got some really nice looking vegetables and produce at this time," Mr. Grote says.

Travis Dike of Ben Wheeler says because of the rain, some of his crops are running two weeks late.

"Right now I'm selling potatoes and onions mostly...14 different kinds of produce growing," Mr. Dike says.

But Mr. Dike says in just a few weeks he along with other farmers will have more than enough to sell.

Mr. Dike says the next time you run out of your favorite fruit or veggie, skip the grocery store and instead head on down to the Farmer's Market and support a local farmer.

If you didn't get a chance to stop by the market, don't worry it will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays beginning at 7:00 a.m. each day under the Livestock Pavilions all summer long.
