Fetus found in trash bin

CANUTILLO, Texas - Sheriff's deputies in El Paso County are trying to find out how a fetus ended up in a trash bin outside a convenience store.

Authorities have identified the 29-year-old mother but have made
no arrests pending the completion of an autopsy in the next few
days, Deputy Jesse Tovar told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Until more progress is made in the investigation, officials are
classifying the case as an "unattended death," he said.

Tovar said he does not know if the fetus was male or female and
how long the mother had been pregnant.

Authorities went to the scene and discovered the fetus Saturday night after being contacted by staff at a hospital where the woman apparently went for medical attention.

It was unclear why the fetus was discarded, said Tovar, who
added that such cases are rare in the El Paso area.
