The Texas Forestry Association continues to protect forestry in Texas working closely with agencies to making sure their getting the resources they need and while East Texas is still recovering from our devastating drought of 2011, it's never too early to prepare for another one.

We spoke to officials at a meeting held in Lufkin at the Texas Forestry Headquarters. "Our program is celebrating 100 years of successful programs and it started in 1914 to promote forest conservation," said Ron Hufford, Executive Director of Texas Forestry Association.

The Texas Forestry Association and Texas A&M Forest Service continue to conserve, protect and lead.

"You have the chance to work with land owners and property owners and home owners to protect their life and property is very rewarding," said Hughes Simpson, Texas A&M Forest Service.

We're told close to 70- percent of forests are owned by private land owners. after the severe drought and wildfires in 2011 it left many East Texans worried and leaving agencies in need of resources.

"We had a lot... Thousands and thousands of trees that died, we had to close all of our recreation areas," Ernie Murray, USDA-Forest Service.

"Weather in East Texas is as unpredictable as any place in the country so we got to remain vigilant we got to make sure that our fuels are controlled and low and we also have to make sure that we are ready when disaster strikes to respond," said Hughes.

Officials with the TFA tell us they continue to address issues such as, water concerns, wood certification, supporting property rights and wildfire management and funding for fire equipment, also providing funding and resources for other programs.

"Rural Texas needs to stand together on promoting what is important to our members and private land owners," said Hufford.

Texas Forestry Association is celebrating 100 years.
