A fire in Canton destroys nearly 30 buildings.

Canton Police tell KETK that the fire started around 3:48 a.m. after police noticed the blaze coming from the Mountain area.

Police and fire officials began evacuating the area immediately.

All fire departments in Van Zandt County assisted in putting out the fire or helping with city work.

Police tell us that about 25 people were evacuated from their homes and fortunately there were no injuries.

About 25 to 30 buildings were destroyed in this fire.

Fire crews will not be able to determine what started the fire until the debris is cleared.

Canton is a fire hazard and you would think what they spend tax dollars on. It sure is not the safety of the people or property. This was a time bomb as with other areas or first monday. We should be glad no one died. Maybe the city of Canton will remove there heads from there butts and fix these fire hazards waiting to happen. First Monday is a very unsafe place for you and your family in so many areas. Maybe this town will wake up but I doubt it as safety is not a concern if it cost money

Those tinderboxes were probably grandfathered to some 1940's fire code. I used to drive past there often and asked myself then when something like this was going to happen. Never a question of IF, just WHEN.
Newer buildings at First Monday are built to updated codes. If you want Canton to do more- get involved- tell the city council what thye need to do to modernize- and be prepared to pay for it in your taxes. More first responders (firemen, police?) Be prepared to pay up.
