SMITH COUNTY - A fire in the low-risk facility of the Smith County Jail causes a small explosion.
Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith tells us around 3:00 p.m. a maintenance worker was working on a leaky gas line when a spark caused a minor explosion. Mattresses on the other side of the wall set fire and forced jail officials to evacuate the building.
Smith says 140 inmates were moved to a safe area then to the recreation yard. All Smith County security officers and other law enforcement surrounded the area to make sure everyone was safe and accounted for.
The Sheriff says there's was no risk of prisoners escaping.
The maintenance worker suffered minor injuries.
