First freeze sends many into shelters

Longview — The coldest air mass to hit Northeast Texas in almost two years brought temperatures into the teens and forced the homeless and many people living in substandard housing to seek shelter.
Hiway 80 Rescue Mission accepted 20 new residents Sunday night, said Executive Director Eric Burger. The mission was braced for even more Monday, as temperatures were poised to dive even lower.
