First Presbyterian Church in Longview welcomes new pastor
Longview — Members of First Presbyterian Church in Longview filed out of the sanctuary Sunday, but not before stopping to welcome their new pastor, Kendal Land.
Land preached his first sermon to the congregation Sunday morning, marking the first time First Presbyterian Church in Longview has had a full-time pastor since May 2012. Former pastor Jonathan Jehorek and more than 70 percent of attending church members left First Presbyterian Church of Longview to form Evangelical Presbyterian Church Longview.
First Presbyterian currently has 210 members, according to session clerk Ebb Mobley.
“Today is a celebration of the continuation of our rebirth,” Land said. “I know that talking to many of you, you can’t wait to see what God has in store for you next.”
The rift in the church came after a debate over the church leaving the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A), a national denomination that decided to allow the ordination of non-celibate homosexuals.
