Tyler (KETK) — KETK brought you a report recently about car thefts being on the decline.
But among those that are stolen, the model at the top of the list has recently changed.
The Ford F-250 is now at the top of the list as a new favorite for thieves.
It replaces the Cadillac Escalade, which held the title for years.
In Texas, Gary King with the East Texas Auto Theft Task Force says Chevy and Ford trucks have been the most stolen for a while.
The Highway Loss Data Institute reports the F-250 now has the highest insurance claim frequency.
"We looked at the number of theft claims relative to the number of vehicles insured, in order to produce what we refer to as theft claim frequencies," said Matt Moore, vice president of The Highway Loss Data Institute.
The average amount paid by an insurer for an F-250 is about $7,000, indicating there are more reported thefts from the truck than thefts of the truck.
"If contractors are leaving expensive tools in the bed of a pickup and those things get stolen, they can file claims for those," Moore said.
King says though he hasn't seen a trend in more F-250 thefts in East Texas, he knows why they may be popular among thieves.
"They are using those trucks because they are bigger to smuggle drugs, illegal aliens and smash and grabs in Mexico," King said. "There's more places to hide."
