The Lufkin weather for 2012 was especially warm compared to records collected over the course of 30 years by the National Weather Service in Shreveport, La. Every month except October had an increased temperature departure from the normal yearly average. Due to increased rainfall during the first half of the year, the drought that began in 2011 was brought to a much-needed end.

The year began warm, as January reached an average monthly temperature of 54.4 degrees Fahrenheit — 5.4 degrees above than normal. On Jan. 22, NWS in Shreveport recorded the highest temperature of the month at 80 degrees. A low of 25 degrees was recorded on Jan. 3 and Jan. 13. A total of 5.32 inches of rain fell compared to the yearly average of 4.18 inches. Lufkin saw flash flood warnings on Jan. 9 and 10, with windy conditions causing downed power lines and trees. On Jan. 26, heavy rains and strong winds caused damage to a local church’s roof, local homes and businesses, and various power outages.
