Fort Polk soldier killed in Afghanistan
FORT POLK, La. (AP) - A Fort Polk soldier has died of injuries
from a rocket-propelled grenade attack in Afghanistan.
The U.S. Army says 24-year-old Pvt. Devon J. Harris of Mesquite,
Texas, died Saturday in Wardak Province, Afghanistan.
Harris was a combat engineer with the Brigade Special Troops
Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division
headquartered at Fort Drum, N.Y., but its 4th Brigade Combat Team
is based out of Fort Polk.
Harris joined the Army in August 2009 and arrived at Fort Polk
that December. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation
Enduring Freedom in October.
Officials said Monday that Harris earned the National Defense
Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the
Army Service Ribbon during his short military career.
His survivors include his mother and father.
